Review

The latest entrant of Nikon, the D3100, combines all the current must-have features in a camera and even some additional ones. For its price, the camera, which is also relatively compact and lightweight, is a very good catch. The image quality produced by the camera is exceptionally good with some excellent color reproductions. The D3100 also offers a good noise profile which matches with the leader in the entry level category, the Pentax k-x.

Another good feature of this camera is the ease of use. Not only does the D3100 help the amateur photographers to take better shots with its upgraded guide mode, but it also steps them up to a better echelon of photography. All the appropriate settings can be chosen from the guide mode without the need of plunging out of it, making it more preferable than reading the user's manual. Although the max speed of photo-capture is an average 3 fps (frames per second), the D3100 offers a laudable 11 point autofocus, with the camera focusing on the target almost instantaneously.

But, the camera does not have an inbuilt vibration reduction, so buying a lens with this feature is a necessity. The burst performance, at 2.9fps, is also a bit slow for fast moving objects. So it can prove tad disappointing for the birds lovers. The video shooting is also not as fast as compared to other DSLRs. Another disappointment is the small handgrip, as is quite a task to wrap three fingers around it. Also, even though the D3100 can be called a very good entry level camera, it is quite similar to its predecessor the D3000, added only with a few additional features. It is also priced the same as the professional D5000, which in some cases is a better camera. So at times, the camera tends to fade in comparison with its own companions. But in all it is a good camera which gives you excellent quality pictures and in the end that matters the most, right!
